ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on Ōhara's life and career, from the son of a feudal official to a modern mining engineer. After receiving a traditional samurai education, Ōhara was accepted into the ICE. Based on a close study of examples drawn from his lecture notes, examinations, and final papers, as well as Ōhara's graduation thesis, it is possible to reconstruct Ōhara's education at the ICE. This makes it possible to study both the teaching methods and the learning outcomes of ICE students. Of particular importance are his internship reports. They not only reflect the application of theoretical knowledge in a practical setting but also serve as detailed contemporary accounts of the development status of the mines visited.
