ABSTRACT
People in Asia respond with amazement when asked what the university is actually for; in other words, what they understand the mission of the classical university to be. 1 , 2 The debate on this question in Europe and in the US barely exists in Asia. Teaching and research belong in every university model, of course; but the Asian tradition is very different from the European or American one, and it is important to take this into account when thinking about the future development of the university.
