ABSTRACT
I Nyoman Kakul was without doubt one of Bali's most famous Topeng dancers of the 20h century. He rapidly established himself as a dance teacher to kings and princes across Bali. So well known was Kakul that he was invited to Europe and the US to take part in performances for an international audience. Kakul was also one of the first Balinese dancers to have non-Balinese students study under him. This chapter explores the main episodes in Kakul's artistic life and his legacy in shaping the Topeng scene in Batuan today.
