ABSTRACT
Ida Bagus Alit is a Topeng dancer and mask maker who lives in the village of Lod Tunduh, just outside the bustling tourist centre of Ubud. He has been making masks for over 40 years, and one of his specialities is the sacred Sidha Karya mask. In this chapter, Alit talks about Topeng and we follow him through a conversation about the story of Sidha Karya. This chapter is my translation of Alit's personal reflections on how he understands himself as a mask maker and a Topeng dancer.
