ABSTRACT

In this essay, Lydia Martín, a long-time student of Gamelan and Balinese dance from Chicago discusses their experience of learning Topeng and male-style dances as a non-Balinese. Bringing Balinese Topeng to an American audience poses concerns around how to be culturally appropriate and respectful cross culturally. In this conversation, Lydia talks about masks, art and the feelings of exuberance that come from learning Topeng.
