ABSTRACT
Topeng has often been identified as masked dance theatre enacting tales from Balinese chronicles. My creation of a modern form of Topeng called Topeng “Tuan Tepis” is an artistic endeavour to refocus the meaning of Topeng by moving it away from traditional narratives. In choreographing this performance, I showcase the versatility of classical Topeng theatre through the use of an unconventional story and new types of masks.
