ABSTRACT

The chapters in this book cover, in varying degrees, aspects of the two topics highlighted in the title, governance and development, with particular reference to the Nigerian experience in the 2000s and 2010s. Some African and international comparisons are provided in some of the chapters. The following are the main issues discussed in the book: electoral legitimacy, rule of law, civil liberties (including human rights), accountability and transparency (including anti-corruption), administrative competence, development-oriented leadership, and a devolved federation. All these seven issues, with the exception of a devolved federation, feature prominently in the development literature that is focused on governance/good governance. A devolved federation is only featured in some chapters as a key macro-governance issue in the Nigerian milieu.
