ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationship between sustainability imperatives and digital transformation. It examines how digitalization both facilitates and limits environmentally impactful activities. This analysis highlights areas for alignment but also exposes underlying conflicts between ecological responsibility and technological optimization. In contrast to an approach that views sustainability as an external constraint, this chapter’s analysis of empirical data and theoretical frameworks shows that successful sustainable digital transformation necessitates the careful consideration of environmental factors when decisions regarding technological transitions are being made.
