ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a capstone reflection on maintaining academic rigor and research quality across diverse methodologies, especially in innovative or mixed-methods studies. It opens by revisiting core criteria of sound research – such as validity and reliability in quantitative research, and credibility and trustworthiness in qualitative research – and examines how these standards can be upheld when combining multiple methods or using novel digital data sources. The chapter addresses issues of research transparency and ethics in the digital age, highlighting practices like pre-registration of study plans, data sharing, and thorough ethical review as essential safeguards when working with big data or AI-driven analyses. It also links methodological rigor to broader philosophical considerations, emphasizing the importance of strong theoretical framing, critical reflexivity, and acknowledgment of the researcher’s positionality (even in ostensibly “objective” quantitative work) for ensuring integrity. By positioning rigor as the common thread that unites quantitative, qualitative, and mixed approaches, Chapter 8 reinforces the volume’s overarching message: embracing new tools and methodologies must go hand in hand with a steadfast commitment to ethical standards and the highest levels of scholarly excellence.
