ABSTRACT

The first chapter examines how an unprecedented abundance of digital data is revolutionizing social science and management research. It highlights new opportunities enabled by “big data” – from real-time analysis of social media sentiment to mining massive transactional datasets – while also addressing the challenges of filtering noise, storing terabytes of information, and interpreting heterogeneous sources. The chapter argues that data literacy and robust digital infrastructure have become as crucial as traditional methodological skills. Researchers must learn to harness complex, high-volume data responsibly, which includes developing technical competencies and ethical awareness. By showcasing both the promise and pitfalls of data-intensive approaches, this chapter sets the stage for the volume’s central message: mastering data management and infrastructure is essential for producing trustworthy, impactful research in the digital age.
