ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 examines how robust data governance frameworks, adherence to FAIR principles, and ethical considerations are interwoven in modern research practice. It outlines institutional policies and processes that ensure that data are collected, stored, shared, and disposed of in compliance with legal and ethical standards. Key topics include the development of governance policies (defining data ownership, access rights, and privacy protections) and the implementation of FAIR principles (making data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable through proper metadata and standards). The chapter also discusses challenges like balancing open data with privacy (e.g., GDPR compliance), establishing data stewardship roles, and employing technological solutions (such as secure data enclaves, blockchain, or AI-driven compliance tools) to uphold data integrity. Ultimately, it argues that ingraining ethical vigilance and clear governance in research culture is essential for trustworthy, high-impact data-intensive science.
