ABSTRACT
Two methods for communicating with voices are discussed here. The Talking with Voices approach, rooted in Stone and Stone’s seminal work, is described with guidance given for undertaking a conversation with a voice. Emphasis is given to the respectful attitude necessary to start, stay in, and close a helpful conversation with a voice. Guidance is offered to then explore the conversation with a voice through debriefing and giving space to make any links with previous conversations, life map, and voice profiles. Following this, a novel approach is introduced to communicate with a voice through a mutual exchange of marks on paper. The discovery of this approach is described and illustrated. Guidance for voice hearers and supporters is offered regarding how to engage a voice in mark-making and then how to support a voice hearer to interpret the marks made with their voice. This chapter reflects on how these methods offer opportunities to deepen relationships with voices and help to clarify reasons for disharmony with voices. These ways of communicating can give voices opportunities to share directly and indirectly the critical messages they carry and can offer a voice hearer ways to increasingly understand their voices.
