ABSTRACT
By exploring the origins of her indigenous Sakha name, Kyunney Takasaeva examines the ways in which Sakha names contain the history of her people, as well as how they have been affected by the intertwined processes of Christianization, Russification, and the onset of the Soviet period. She addresses how this history is best understood by looking at the transformations of Sakha names over time, and how these speak directly to these periods of colonization and change, as well as the recent interests by the Sakha to return to their own cultural naming conventions.
