ABSTRACT

The purpose of this first chapter is to explain what adventure therapy is and how it works as a therapeutic medium for positive change for many forms of clients. Adventure therapy is defined as the use of adventure experiences, usually under the care of a mental health professional, to create positive change in clients with mental health issues. While there are many reasons why adventure therapy experiences work, the five basic forms of operation include challenge, adventure, environment, group dynamics, and metaphors. It is usually the combination of one or more of these factors to create the positive changes seen from adventure experiences.
