ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate experiences and processes used in metaphoric adventure therapy activities. Metaphors are used in three ways. The first is spontaneous metaphoric transfer. This is where the linking of the adventure experience and the client’s issue naturally match one another during an experience. The second is analogous metaphoric experiences which is when the client makes a metaphoric connection during the debriefing. The third is structured metaphoric transfer and this is when the therapist proactively “sets the stage during the activity” for the client to make a connection. Some of the activities explained are Stepping Stones, Embrace Change, and Path to Recovery.
