ABSTRACT

This chapter explores two historically Christian nations, both of which appeal to “European values” to promote diametrically opposed immigration policies. In Hungary, the agnostic-turned-faithful Christian prime minister of Hungary declared illiberal Christian democracy as the foundation of the nation whose heritage he claims is threatened by immigrants. Consequently, the protection and preservation of Christian values mean keeping immigrants out, especially Muslims. In Germany, Angela Merkel, the daughter of a Protestant minister, called on the virtues of her Christian faith to implement a generous policy of welcoming refugees into Germany. For her, European values are no longer Christian values if Europe shuts the door on disadvantaged strangers.
