ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter lays out the central concern of, and discussions in the book, informing the reader on why an acknowledgement of capitalism and social class is necessary for feminist leisure research. Dwelling on the paradigmatic rivalry between feminist theories, the book takes a side on theories which embark on relationality, historicity and contextuality. Respectability constitutes the backbone of the book, allowing to exploration of the experiences of women of various social classes in relation to global and national cultural distinctions. The book expands on the contemporary discussions in the field through an empirical study on women's everyday leisure experiences in the Turkish context, presenting voices of women with various profiles living in two differently classed, urban neighbourhoods.
