ABSTRACT
Two concepts are explored in this chapter, namely, access and alliances. Following Jesse Ribot and Nancy Peluso, it is explained in this chapter the concept of access (to land) as ‘bundle of powers’, distinct from property’s ‘bundle of rights’. It is quite appropriate that it is the first key term in the book because it is a fundamental concept in the politics of land. Alliances between different classes and social groups within the state and society animate the politics of land. The chapter discusses the classical alliances for or against redistributive land policies, and the continuity and change in contemporary times.
