ABSTRACT

There is only one entry in this chapter, namely, territorialisation. In classical agrarian studies, land has been usually understood as agricultural land and forestland that play a key role in capitalist agrarian transformations. The most common understanding of land in this context is plot-based, that is, farmland, rangeland, and so on. This is important but proved to be limited. Increasingly, there has been a realization among activists and academics of the importance of the landscape or territory. Territory has become a key element in the many demands by agrarian and Indigenous peoples, for example, recognizing the importance of plot-based views and advocacies but going beyond these. Territorialization in this chapter takes this on board and extends it further, covering issues like authority, institutions, rules and others.
