ABSTRACT

In this book, I want to explore some of the key conditions that are necessary to deliver global open access in a way that is effective and equitable. I will argue that alongside open access to research literature and other forms of openness in science (which I will call ‘scientific openness’) additional kinds of openness are required. I want to make the case for what I will call ‘epistemic openness’ and ‘participatory openness’. I will introduce these concepts in a moment, and then go on in the rest of this book to explore them in more detail and discuss their relationship with open access.
