ABSTRACT
Our current food system is harming our planet and our health. The way we produce much of the food we eat is driving climate change, damaging nature, harming animal welfare and causing obesity; and we waste a shocking amount of food. Waitrose believes we must urgently change to protect and rebuild nature and our natural resources, improve human health and ensure business remains relevant. This chapter examines ways to bring about this change using disruption, collaboration and customers. Disruption means new ways of thinking and new perspectives; collaboration calls for working around the ferociously competitive UK food industry with input from government on, e.g., healthy eating guidance, and civil society organisations; and for customers, the need is for clear labelling and food production standards that enable them to play their part. This chapter is written with hope that we can make the necessary urgent changes so that it will be possible to have high welfare farming systems in biodiverse landscapes, with widely available good food.
