ABSTRACT

This chapter, “Exploring Semiotics and Curiosities”, focuses on the semiotic structures found in the selection of Jeffers’ picturebooks with specific examples from “The Boy” series, Stuck and “The Hueys” series. It explores the depictions of childhood through the verbal and visual constructs within Jeffers’ picturebooks by analysing the use of colour, the construction and orientation of the imagery, and the position of the child. In particular, the chapter explores the curiosities of the visual narratives to argue that these texts allow for both childhood innocence and childhood development.
