ABSTRACT
This chapter engages with Amartya Sen’s work on Development as Freedom, first highlighting its merits, but also its problematic aspects. It then argues that these problematic aspects arise from the uncritical reproduction of the discourse of ‘development’ in his work and suggests replacing it with a discourse of justice, opening up new political arenas for progressive demands: reparations for colonialism, ecological justice, and a cosmopolitan world order.
