ABSTRACT
In this chapter, mapping as a modelling process will be introduced and connected to semiotic and media studies based views on maps, linking maps and other media to wider systems for geocommunication. This understanding is then used to point out some possible ways to develop further tools for historical analysis of landscapes and cityscapes while also including different layers of space conceptualisations, from the conceptual models underlying the information systems themselves to hypothetical understandings of historical spaces and their conceptualisations.
