This introductory chapter situates the book within existing research on socially engaged art, positioning it in relation to key literature and identifying gaps in the field. It outlines the book's aim to examine socially engaged art as an academic subject and a catalyst for higher arts education institutions’ societal impact. By framing socially engaged art as integral to higher education, the chapter lays the groundwork for exploring its contributions to creativity, learning, collaboration, and social transformation.
