ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the evolving role of activism within higher arts education, emphasising its transformative impact on institutions and individuals alike. It explores how socially engaged art practices intersect with activism to address political, social, and identity-based challenges. Drawing on recent student movements in Finland, Denmark, and Norway, the chapter analyses the educational opportunities and tensions arising from advocacy efforts and identity politics in this context.
Using case studies, the chapter focuses on the potential of activism to foster critical dialogue, inclusivity, and creativity while acknowledging the challenges posed by polarisation and cancel culture. These dynamics often test the balance between fostering artistic freedom and ensuring open, diverse discourse within academic settings. The chapter concludes by advocating for dialogue that values diversity and individuality, setting the stage for discussions on creating safer, more inclusive educational environments.
