ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the role of socially engaged art in four future operational contexts, as outlined in recent international scenario work on the futures of higher arts education institutions. It examines how socially engaged art can inspire transformative practices, foster collaboration, and drive positive social and environmental change within higher arts education. By addressing the challenges posed by evolving political, economic, and technological landscapes, the chapter underscores the urgency of integrating socially engaged art into higher education. It further demonstrates the full potential of socially engaged art for higher arts education institutions in fulfilling their Third Mission—engagement with society—while adapting to and shaping a future that blends elements from multiple scenarios. Through this exploration, the chapter offers insights into the complexity of future educational environments and emphasises the need for socially engaged art to be studied as a distinct field, enabling institutions to better harness its power for meaningful change.
