ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I present ten case studies that manifest the “social turn” in the arts, showcasing how artists globally engage with communities to address diverse social issues through socially engaged practices. Each case demonstrates a unique, culturally rooted approach, from embodied ecological education in Finland to advocacy for LGBTIQ+ rights in Ghana and Indonesia, highlighting the evolving role of the artist as a facilitator of dialogue and collective empowerment. Through methodologies ranging from theatre and participatory narratives to urban games and collaborative workshops, these case studies illustrate a paradigm shift in the arts, moving from individual artistic expression to a practice centred on social responsibility and collaborative transformation. By examining how these artists integrate cultural narratives, foster critical reflection, and encourage community engagement, the chapter underscores the transformative potential of socially engaged art to promote a more inclusive, democratic, and participatory society.
