ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the growing academic recognition and integration of socially engaged art within higher education institutions worldwide, focusing on a variety of educational programmes, from BA to postgraduate levels, as well as short courses and MOOCs that prepare students and professionals for careers that address complex global challenges. Building on recent curriculum analyses, the chapter examines these diverse educational pathways across Asia, Europe, North America, the UK, and Oceania, emphasising the importance of interdisciplinary and collaborative learning. It highlights the need for dedicated programmes that cultivate artistic and equip students with critical, analytical, and reflective capabilities to tackle the social and ethical issues central to socially engaged art. Also, the gaps in research-oriented education within these programmes are brought out and discussed, emphasising the growing need for systematic study and knowledge production to solidify socially engaged art as both a professional field and a subject of academic inquiry. While current offerings contribute to social change through practice-based approaches, further development of research methodologies is essential for advancing the field and fostering long-term societal impact.
