ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the emergence of socially engaged art as a distinct subject of study within higher arts education, emphasising the importance of an insider's perspective in advancing its unique epistemologies, methodologies, and ethical dimensions. It argues that socially engaged art, focusing on collaboration, community involvement, and societal change, requires a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to be fully understood, researched, and taught. The chapter also advocates for developing specific academic criteria that acknowledge its distinct contributions to artistic practice and societal transformation. By integrating various forms of knowledge and fostering critical reflection, the chapter outlines key strategies for legitimising socially engaged art within higher education, positioning it as a transformative force in the cultural and social landscape.
