ABSTRACT
As the world faces pressing challenges in forest restoration, sustainability, and livelihoods, Nepal's Community Forestry System provides valuable lessons. Over four decades, Community Forestry System has regenerated degraded forests and strengthened local governance, yet it continues to evolve in response to shifting policies, market dynamics, equity concerns, and climate change. This introductory chapter provides a navigational frame for the book, outlining emerging themes and contemporary policy dilemmas that shape Nepal's forestry landscape now and in the future. The book is structured around four broad themes: (1) governance and tenure; (2) forest restoration and biodiversity; (3) climate resilience and socio-economic transitions; and (4) livelihoods, equity, and justice. Seventeen chapters within these themes critically examine various aspects of Community Forestry System, drawing on interdisciplinary research and real-world practice to uncover emerging perspectives. They explore issues such as tenure security, power dynamics in forest governance, the role of community-based forest management in carbon sequestration, and the tensions between conservation goals and local livelihoods. This chapter concludes with an overview of what to expect from the rest of the book, guiding readers on an immersive journey through Nepal's community forestry experience.
