ABSTRACT
What is in fact taught and believed about the Virgin Mary is various Christian churches? This chapter discusses the central teachings about her, not only in the Catholic and Orthodox tradition but also her presence – or lack of it – in Judaism and Islam. The silence of the Lutheran theology on Mary is contrasted with Luther’s own views. The most important theological roles of the Mother of God serve as the background for their feminist critique.
