ABSTRACT
This chapter begins by providing a brief overview of the body’s immune system and the main effector mechanisms activated by vaccination. It then describes how the presence of vaccine-induced immunity can be assessed. The chapter concludes by describing types of vaccine failure and the importance of distinguishing these when monitoring vaccination programmes.
