ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with a brief overview of the history of programmatic vaccination. It then provides a theoretical background of the overall aims of vaccination programmes and what determines an appropriate aim to be set. Subsequently, the chapter describes different vaccination programme types and strategies, and how decisions about vaccine policy and adjustments to vaccination programmes are generally made. The chapter then goes on to discuss the rationale for monitoring and evaluation of vaccination programmes and provides an overview of the roles of different stakeholders and international networks in this. The chapter concludes with an overview of the options for modifying vaccination programmes.
