ABSTRACT

News framing effects is a subfield of framing research. In this chapter we define news framing as the process of selecting and emphasizing certain aspects of reality. More specifically, journalistic frames are frames that are shaped by journalists and their work. We outline key distinctions in news frames—between equivalence frames and emphasis frames, and between generic and issue-specific frames. We briefly explore the historical roots of the framing concept and introduce an integrative view of the framing process whereby news framing effects are understood in the light of journalistic production, news frames, audience characteristics, and the context in which the news framing effects are consumed.
