ABSTRACT

This chapter continues with the theme of the imposition of travel-discipline by looking at railway tickets. This chapter is the first in Indian railway history to be devoted exclusively to railway tickets. Tickets are noted as a tool of the colonial state to transform Indian society by introducing a rigid travel mechanism, presumably to influence Indians beyond railway travel. This chapter demonstrates that the rules of ticketing, though rigid, were also compromised at many levels. As such, this chapter questions our current assumptions about the putative role of railway tickets in imposing travel-discipline in colonial India
