ABSTRACT

This chapter explores, very briefly, theories that explore how perception shapes reality. Specifically, it by exploring theoretical ideas associated with behaviour, operant conditioning and social cognitive theories such as those associated with Bandura. How health and well-being can be understood using sociological ideas connected to the social construction of reality will then be considered. These theoretical frameworks will be presented in relation to their value in enabling us to make sense of the ways health, well-being and associated behaviour are shaped and how and in what way martial arts can be useful in helping us understand this area. By exploring the broader value of martial arts, in relation to health and well-being and notions of life long learning, this chapter provides the theoretical framework for the following empirical chapters.
