ABSTRACT

In this concluding chapter, we draw together the key ideas presented in the book, focusing specifically on how the learning and practice of martial arts, at whatever level of expertise, can contribute, in important ways, to health and well-being. By exploring the ways that engaging in martial arts can inform individual narratives of self, relating specifically to an individual’s perception and sense of efficacy with respect to their own health and well-being, implications for health practitioners and general health and well-being support are offered. Final thoughts and reflections on the questions the research raises in relation to our understanding of the role of psychological theory in narratives and perceptions of health and well-being are also addressed. Finally, the ways that martial arts as a medium that supports lifelong learning, is a resource that connects communities, promotes cultural awareness and can be a way of life for some are highlighted. Implications, drawn from the research presented in preceding chapters, in relation to factors that matter in supporting martial arts activities in the community are considered as well as the implications for further research.
