ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in this book. The book presents and discusses the concrete skills of making ethically guided choices. These skills include the capability to identify stakeholders, recognition of rights and responsibilities, consideration of the available options and, finally, the ability to make actual choices by applying three ethical approaches, which are labeled as 'consequentialist', 'principled' and 'virtue'. The guided dialogue is particularly effective when dealing with complex ethical issues like privacy in relation to big data or sharing raw data. In addition, different research fields or research groups possess different levels of core ethical awareness. Egocentric patterns can gain additional fuel from the current competitive forces within the research community. Researchers put a lot of time and energy into their research work and they are very eager to see returns from this endeavour.
