ABSTRACT

Recruitment of professors and other academic staff is important not only for individuals but also for universities. Being such a central element of academic life, recruitment of personnel is worth paying attention to from an ethical perspective. This chapter explores stakeholders in the recruitment process and their relationships with each other. Responsibilities in the administrative unit conducting the recruitment process may be divided into collective bodies or to individuals. The recruitment process starts with the decision on what type of position is to be fulfilled. The decision on the type of position is closely followed by setting the selection criteria. The principled ethical considerations require the selection criteria to be both made transparent and followed during the selection process. Once the position and selection criteria have been confirmed and applications have been received, recruitment enters a stage where the values and goals identified earlier are applied in practice.
