ABSTRACT
The global campaign for women's rights and gender equality, and the general work of feminist legal theorists and advocates worldwide, also played a part in the transition. One was the framework of covenants, treaties, conferences, and agreements that followed upon the establishment of the United Nations and its Charter. Key here was first, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, adopted by the UN. The global feminist campaign has had the most profound effect in advancing women's rights and gender equality and in providing succor to activists in developing countries who are fighting for women's rights and women's interests. The Platform for Action has been revisited in two major international meetings to assess the progress that countries have made towards achieving the goals outlined in the Beijing Declaration. To capture the analysis pursued in this chapter, an international women's rights timeline is provided.
