ABSTRACT
This chapter describes at the historical context and theoretical underpinnings that surround the Elizabethan theatre and the ways in which the replica of Shakespeare's Globe introduces new possibilities that inform and inspire how we engage with Shakespeare. It explores by "Activating the body'", which encourages whole-body engagement and heightened kinesthetic awareness in performance. "Awakening the listener" introduces a progressive series of exercises designed to bolster actors' ability to use Shakespeare's language as the main component of storytelling. "Energizing the language" helps actors forge an organic response to the text, to think actively on the line, and to coin the words for themselves. "Developing and playing the Shakespeare score" introduces a system of notation that helps to identify and articulate moments of theatrical practice that can be read as a musician reads a musical composition. "Rehearsing the part" will offer a systematic approach to rehearsing Shakespeare.
