ABSTRACT
Next to its global political relevance, however, religion gives meaning to life; brings people together with a shared sense of identity and belonging; shapes ideas about everyday life, values and norms, and the world at large. In the sense of creating community it has often a local reference, but also comprises relationships, social interaction and an exchange of goods and services.
