ABSTRACT
[I]t is too soon to say with certainty that one has fully understood how to conduct the study of addiction and, in particular, how it may bear upon drugs. To understand in such a way would be to stop reading, to close the book, or even to throw the book at someone. I cannot say that I am prepared to take sides on this exceedingly difficult issue, particularly when the sides have been drawn up with such conceptual awkwardness. Clearly, it is as preposterous to be “for” drugs as it is to take up a position “against” drugs.
