ABSTRACT
This chapter examines one of the most influential figures of early Islam, Umar b. al-Khattab (d. 23/644), who was one of the earliest followers of the Prophet Muhammad. Some of his interpretations of key Qur'anic texts are outlined in this chapter as an example of an early form of a contextualist approach to interpretation.
