ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the Anglophone historical struggle for self-determination. It analyses the government’s key responses to the problem and other dominant approaches that have been advanced as ideal strategies for addressing the problem. In particular, it discusses the government’s decentralisation option and its recent extension to include a special autonomy status for the North-West and South-West regions. It further discusses the prospects for federalism and the practical and legal difficulties attached to the secession option. The chapter concludes with a recommendation for a more systematic and participatory approach to designing a mutually acceptable framework for the self-determination of the peoples of the South-West and North-West regions.
