ABSTRACT

Alongside the building of libraries and the development of library services was the training of librarians. The problem of a lack of trained librarians was recognized as a major challenge for developing nations. Much international library development work thus focused on providing training and library education. Library schools were developed, along with opportunities for study and travel abroad. But the problem of library education remained as one to be overcome. This chapter also considers the formation of library associations as an important step in the making of a modern library profession in many countries. The story of library training and education also reflect aspects of cultural diplomacy in this period, as librarians (and aspiring librarians) from across the globe were brought together.
