ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the logics of analysis, in other words, the 'analytical framework', and a definition of the key concepts. There are many ways to define the five key concepts: 'innovativeness', 'participatory performance', 'successfulness', 'dynamic governance' and 'responsible research and innovation'. Participatory performance refers to the different functions of public engagement (PE), and to the scope and intensity of such activities. Successful PE involves the right people with the right methods and goals, while leaving a big 'footprint' on research, innovation and society. The dynamic governance framework conceptualises interactions between scholars, policy makers and relevant stakeholders in the context of multidimensional governance and actors, who influence on the performance of these programmes. Responsible research and innovation is a policy concept, which has been supported by some recent academic research and reflection. The concept is intended to provide a common policy framework for the development of more advanced forms of science governance in the European research area.
