ABSTRACT
In 2019, Chinese international students constituted the second-largest group of international students in Quebec. The principal challenges they confronted during their time at university are mastery of the language of the host country (English or French), sociocultural adaptation, and racism. According to testimonials from 15 Chinese international students in Montreal, universities’ student services and resources were lacking in terms of both their quantity and quality. According to students, the resources offered by Montreal universities are either inaccessible or under-utilized due to either a lack of awareness or mechanisms of self-exclusion. This chapter lays out, firstly, a descriptive overview of the resources offered in four Montreal universities, and, secondly, perspectives of Chinese international students on these resources. To conclude, this chapter assesses the limits of these resources and follows up by putting forward pathways to foster the adoption of proactive, rather than reactive, strategies for student services.
