ABSTRACT
Anti-Asian racism has been exacerbated since the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting Chinese international students in Canada. Against this background, media coverage in China on anti-Asian racism in North America, including Canada, has ramped up. While emerging research focuses on racism faced by international students from Asia currently in Canada, little is known on how exacerbated anti-Asian racism and increasing media coverage affect perceptions of potential Chinese international students. Through a survey and interviews of students, this chapter aims at understanding how potential international students in China, one of the top countries of origin for international students in Canada, perceive the anti-Asian racism and how it affects their study abroad plans. The findings of this study will inform institutional policies on international student recruitment and support amidst rising global competition for international students.
